De-stress yourself!

Hope everyone’s having a great week!

This week’s post is inspired by LIFE. Whether you’re a student with upcoming deadlines, a writer who also works a busy day job, a parent with a hectic kid schedule or just someone who’s feeling pretty bogged down by the general stresses of life, here are some tips on how to minimise your stress levels and keep in a positive and calm mind frame. Obvious side note – I’m not a doctor, or a psychologist, and these are just ideas I’ve come up with/been inspired to post. But they all work for me!

  1. Make a List

This may sound like a silly task, but I know personally that, if I have a lot to do, I feel a lot better once I’ve written it down. Often I put things in order of importance, or chronologically so I can just work my way down it. Whatever works for you: if you feel overwhelmed by the amount of tasks you have to accomplish today/this week/this month, do jot them down in a list. It will help your brain focus things and you can take a moment to consider what to prioritise and when.

2. Get Some Sleep!

This one’s easier said than done, I know, but getting enough sleep is so important to keep energised and focused. I find that when I’m not sleeping enough I get a lot more stressed and overwhelmed about things, which is never good! Some ways that help me drift off include: stopping working/reading/writing for about an hour before I go to bed to help my brain fully switch off; having a nice hot bath & warm drink; comfy PJs and fresh sheets. Another thing I like to use is the This Works Pillow Spray, which smells amazing and helps me fall asleep quicker.

3. Exercise 

You’ve probably heard this all before, but exercise has been shown to release endorphins and help us feel better about ourselves. It’s a great way to release built up stress! So, whether you’re into the gym, walking or yoga, put some work out clothes on and try and give yourself time dedicated to exercise every week to unwind.

4. Offload

This might not be for everyone, but having a moan/cry to a friend or family member can sometimes be the best remedy for de-stressing for me! I try to keep a positive attitude but often things get on top of me, and when this happens the worse thing to do is keep feelings bottled up. If you’re not comfortable speaking to someone, you could write a blog post or letter/ paint/ whatever you like doing to express yourself!

5. Unplug

Sometimes what we need to really unwind is to disconnect ourselves from the constant pinging of the phones in our hands! So, if and when convenient, try and turn your phone off or leave it alone for a portion of the day. Enjoy your time completely away from it – read a book, enjoy the outdoors, or spend fully focused time with friends/family. The world will still be there when you’re ready to log back in to Facebook!

6. Help Yourself

What we put in our bodies and surround ourselves with impacts on our mental health and stress levels. I’m not going to sit and preach about how eating veg and filling your house with potted plants will cure your stress, but do be mindful about how you can keep yourself in a positive and calm head space. This could be the music you play in the morning – could it be more uplifting? – The clutter on your desk – can these things go in the drawer? – Or planning tonight’s dinner – what will my body and mind thank me for?

7. Make Time For Friends and Family

This is an important one. Often in life we’re all so busy we end up going weeks without spending any time with the ones we love – and that’s pretty crap! So, we all have jam-packed schedules I’m sure, but do try and slot in an hour coffee or an afternoon movie trip in now and then. Enjoying someone else’s company, laughing and getting things off your chest will have a great impact.

8. Have End Goals

For me this is so important. Every time I feel like chucking my essays out the window, I tell myself that I’m so close to getting a degree. This can be applied to anything – you’re writing a short story. Why? To share with a friend? To submit to a contest? To one day transform into a published piece of work? Make sure you keep telling yourself that whatever you’re working on, it’s all going to be worth it. In the end!
